Someone stole my Tesco Clubcard points!

The theft of Tesco Clubcard points is becoming increasingly common.  There are very easy ways of doing it – such as postal workers taking the clearly marked envelopes at the right time of the quarter – and more complex ways, such as hacking into your online account.

This is the email I received over the weekend:

Dear Rob

At Tesco we constantly monitor all of our systems and take the security of our customer’s data very seriously. Our team have noticed some irregular activity on your Tesco Clubcard account and we have cancelled all your vouchers as a precaution.

We will update your account balance accordingly within the next 48 hours and issue you with replacement vouchers in our next mailing commencing in August. However, if you wish to use your voucher(s) prior to this, please call our helpline on 0800 023 4761 who will be happy to assist.

As part of our ongoing work to protect you online we are asking you to create a new stronger password before you log in to your Tesco.com account.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused you, however we hope you can appreciate that we are acting to ensure your account is secure.

Kind regards,

Tesco was on the ball.  I looked at my online account and saw the following vouchers had been used:

26 March – £xx – Andover

9 April – £xx – Prescot Extra

15 May – £xx – Aylesbury

The paper vouchers were still in my house.  My online account had been accessed and duplicate vouchers printed.  Someone had then been using them around the country – albeit with an oddly large gap between transactions, which risked giving me time to notice what was happening (fat chance, as it turned out).

It is not at all clear how this happened.  My account was clearly compromised and the logical place to point the finger is at Tesco itself.

I’m pleased to say that Tesco handled the situation well.   I was easily able to call and speak to someone who ensured that ALL of my unused vouchers were cancelled and recredited to my account.  (Tesco had spotted the Aylesbury transaction already but had not spotted and recredited the two earlier ones.)  This means that my old vouchers get a revised two year expiry date – so there is some upside for me in all of this!
