Should you convert Tesco Clubcard points into Hampton Court Palace tickets?

Is it worth converting your Tesco Clubcard points into Hampton Court Palace tickets? And how do you do it?  Today I want to look at whether Hampton Court Palace tickets are a good use of your Clubcard vouchers.

Not all Clubcard Boost offers are a great deal. This page of Shopper Points helps you decide which is the best Clubcard redemption by listing ALL Clubcard Boost offers based on the multiple of face value you get.

As you can see, offers range from 4 x face value (days out vouchers, restaurant deals) down to 2 x. Even at double the face value, of course, you are getting a better deal than redeeming your vouchers in a Tesco store at face value.

Spending Clubcard vouchers on Hampton Court Palace tickets

You can convert your Clubcard vouchers into Hampton Court Palace tickets on this page of the Tesco website.

You will need £2.50 of Clubcard points for a £10 token which you can use for any ticket bought on the door (children under 5 are free). Your tokens will be posted to you within 5 working days.

The tokens are valid for six months from the day you redeem.

Is Hampton Court Palace a good way to spend your Clubcard points?

On the face of it, yes.

A Hampton Court Palace ticket on the door is £21 for an adult and £10.50 for a child under 16. If you book online in advance that comes down to £19.80 for an adult and £9.90 for a child.

(Booking in advance commits you to a particular day whatever the weather. A Clubcard ticket is flexible as long as you use it within six months.)

You can only exchange Clubcard vouchers in multiples of £2.50, so £2.50 gets you £10 of tokens, £5 gets you £20 of tokens etc. Because the tickets are priced at £21 for an adult and £10.50 for a child, you will have to either top up with cash or order more tokens than you actually need.

Generally speaking you do get 4 x face value which is great.

However depending on the amount of tickets and the additional cash you might pay, the face value will be slightly below 4 x. If you only want one £21 ticket, for example, you need to exchange £5 of Clubcard vouchers for 2 x £10 tokens – and pay an additional £1.

The fact that online tickets booked in advance are cheaper makes very little difference as you only save £1 per ticket this way.  It remains a very good redemption.

If you are taking your family, you will get a lower return than 4 x but it still a decent deal. This is because you cannot use Clubcard vouchers to pay for family packages.

A package for one adult and up to 3 children is £37.  Tickets bought individually – which you need to do if you use Clubcard tokens – would be £52.50 for the same group.  That would require £12.50 of Clubcard vouchers so your return would be a little under 3 x face value.

That assumes you are 1 adult and 3 children, however.  For 2 adults and 2 children, a family ticket is £51.70.  Buying the same tickets using Clubcard vouchers would be £63 which requires £15 of Clubcard tokens.  You are still getting over 3 x face value here.

Hampton Court Palace is a good way to spend your Clubcard points, but you might also want to consider redeeming for one of the other high value Clubcard point redemptions on our list.

  1. If you live in the area or plan to visit HCP (and/or Tower of London + other 4 historic royal palaces) more than once, then it’s worth getting membership. Membership allows free entry at any of the palaces, queue jump (which is very useful at Tower of London), discounted food/drink at cafes and some fun members only events (although you still have to pay for those).

Also – if you sign up with direct debit (cancel before the period runs out) you get 15 months for the price of 12.
