Special deal: get 1p per Nectar point when redeeming with Virgin Trains East Coast

As Nectar offers are often targeted, we can’t always cover them on Shopper Points. However this Nectar offer seems to be for pretty much everyone based on an unscientific survey we did!

Until 12th October, you will get 50% of your Nectar points back when redeeming with Virgin Trains East Coast vouchers.

As I will explain below, this is a complicated way of saying ‘you will get 1p per Nectar point’!

virgin train on tracks

If you redeem your Nectar points at Virgin Trains East Coast between now and 12th October, you will get 50% of your Nectar points back in your account within 28 days.   The only rule is that it is only on the first redemption you make during this period.

Before making a redemption, check that you are targetted by logging in to the Nectar website or looking at the Nectar app ‘Offers’ section.

Let me explain how this deal works in practice.

Let’s say you use 1000 Nectar points to get a £5 Virgin Trains East Coast voucher.

You will get 500 Nectar points back within 28 days, hence you have only spent 500 Nectar points on a £5 voucher.  That is 1p per point.

However ….. if you have only got 500 Nectar points in the first place, you can only get a £2.50 voucher and not a £5 voucher.  Because of the way the deal is structured, you cannot empty out your entire Nectar account this way and get 1p per point.  You will always end up with a large chunk of points returned to your account. Nevertheless this is a good offer if you need East Coast train tickets and have got enough Nectar points.

Bookings can only be made on the Virgin Trains East Coast website.  Remember that the vouchers can only be used for Standard or First Advance tickets.

Vouchers are valid for 12 months.  Full terms and conditions for East Coast redemptions are here.

More details of the Virgin Trains and Nectar partnership can be found on this page of the West Coast site.

PS.  I know the photograph above is a West Coast and not an East Coast train ……!

Comments

  1. What do you mean by vouchers are valid for 12 months?

    • You exchange your Nectar points for a voucher code which you then apply to your VTEC acct and is valid for 12 months

  2. Does anyone know from previous times if these will likely be usable with sale fares when VTEC Winter/Summer Seat Sales come along?

    • Assuming they work like red spotted hanky on Tesco, they will be an encode you add you your account and are thence forth treated like cash – so valid as payment for any fare at all

  3. Worked a treat for me. Used 20k Nectar and got £100 Virgin vouchers (2 times £50) and just need to see that I get 10k nectar points back in due course. My vouchers when transferred to my Virgin account show need to be used by 31/1/18 so effectively 15.5 months rather then 12 stated in offer.
