The Tesco Travel Store has become another victim of Tesco’s attempts to go ‘back to basics’ and win back lost customers.
This is not a great loss, to be honest. Tesco Travel Store was run by lastminute.com and did not feature anything which could not be found on that site.
The announcement can be found here.
It had one saving grace – you earned 1 Clubcard point for every £1 you spent. I know some heavy business travellers who were able to book their flights via this site and thus generate a few thousand points per transaction. This only made sense when spending a lot of money, however, due to the excessive £20 credit card fee charged whenever you made a booking.
The reality is that travel is a hugely competitive business and Tesco had no competitive advantage, as it wasn’t negotiating its own deals. The Tesco brand also has no traction in the travel space. Running deals which are no better than you can get elsewhere was never going to improve the faltering Tesco image.
