How to use your Clubcard points to get your kids a First News subscription

First News – website here – is the hugely popular newspaper for people aged between 7 and 14.  It boasts two million readers per week and – if your school is anything like mine – you are bombarded with recommendations from the staff that you get it for your children.

Now that my daughter is entering Year 4, I thought it was about time to sign her up.  I hope it may broaden her interests beyond Minecraft ……

A years subscription to First News is £64.  Alternatively, you can pay £16.49 every three months (for a total cost of £66) by direct debit.

If this sounds pricey, you will be pleased to know that First News is a Tesco Clubcard redemption partner.

Full details are on this page of the Tesco Clubcard website.

First News

The cost is £6.50 of Clubcard vouchers per quarter.  You need to order a new code every quarter in order to keep the subscription running, which is a bit fiddly.  It is a shame that you cannot buy a whole year in advance.

As the cash cost is £16.49 per quarter, you will getting (£16.49 / £6.50 =) 2.5 x the face value of your vouchers.

This is not the most generous Clubcard deal by any means.  This page of Shopper Points ranks all Tesco Clubcard redemptions by the multiple of face value you get.  However, as First News is rarely reduced, it is a genuine discount.

At just £6.50 of Clubcard tokens for three months, it is a low cost way of seeing if your child likes the newspaper or not and you are getting something genuinely educational for your hard-earned points.  You can sign up here.
