72 hour Travel Money Rate Sale at Sainsbury’s Bank

Escaping the cold or planning a ski trip? Wherever life takes you in the nearer future, it may be worth having a look at the Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Money Rate Sale.

Penguins Boulders Beach Cape Town

For 72 hours only (of which 24 hours have already gone!) you can purchase foreign currencies at discounted rates with 0% commission. This offer is only available online and by phone (0845 301 2724) and NOT available in store.   The sale ends at 9.30am on 10th August.

Sainsbury’s Bank travel money is a convenient way to buy foreign currency with 0% commission – on small orders, 0% commission can make up for a slightly poorer exchange rate.  Over 50 currencies are available in store, online and over the phone. You can either have the money delivered to your door or collect it at one of over 200 in-store travel money bureux.

Home delivery is free on orders of £500 or more and there’s a £1.99 administration fee on online orders under £100 when collecting in store. You need to order online by 2pm and 2.30pm by phone (Mon-Thurs) for next day home delivery.  If you collect in store you need to present your Nectar card, a valid photo ID and the card you used to pay for the transaction.

And earn not many Nectar points ….

You can collect Nectar points on every in-store bureau, phone and online order, but the Nectar earning rate is actually not that great.  Who am I kidding?  It is terrible.

5 points for a transaction value of £0 – £249.99

10 points for a transaction value of £250 – £499.99

20 points for a transaction value of £500 – £799.99

50 points for a transaction value of £800 +

Sainsbury’s does offer Nectar card holders a better rate on foreign currency purchases when buying online or over the phone. If you buy at the bureau, Nectar card holder rates are only available on Euros and US dollars.  Note that the points may take up to 60 days to appear on your account.

25p of points for changing £800+ is terrible, although you might as well take the points if you are using Sainsbury’s Bank.  If you want to find out how to get a better deal than 0.5p on Nectar redemptions, read Rob’s review of the Caffe Nero redemption deal and the other articles in that series.

P.S. The penguin photo is one I took at Boulders Beach near Cape Town.  They are well worth the trip if you visit South Africa.
