Tesco and Esso have been working together for a few years and Tesco is now running most of the convenience stores attached to Esso garages. This means that as well as earning Clubcard points when you buy things in the store you also receive Clubcard points on fuel.
You even earn Clubcard points when buying fuel at Esso garages that do NOT have a Tesco store attached.
As not all Esso garages have a Tesco store attached and it can look a little bit confusing at first, here’s a short summary of what to earn where:
Fuel
1 point for every £3 spent on petrol and diesel at Esso garage WITH a Tesco shop
1 point for every 2L of petrol and diesel at participating Esso garages WITHOUT a Tesco shop
Shop
1 point for every £1 spent in the attached Tesco store
You also might get 1 point per £1 at an attached Esso shop that is NOT Tesco, however this is not guaranteed – it is up to each garage to decide
There isn’t much about the Esso / Clubcard relationship on the Tesco website as you can see here and you will need to visit the Esso website in order to find out more.

If you pay with a Tesco MasterCard in a Tesco store, your Clubcard point are automatically added – i.e. the EPS recognises that it also a Clubcard and you don’t have to swipe/present twice
Is it the same in Esso?
Do that & you’re missing out on points – just use your Tesco MC as a Clubcard then pay with an Amex
Esso/Tesco joint venture sites (e.g. those with a Tesco Express shop) will recognise the CC as a Clubcard automatically when used to pay.
Other Esso sites will not – some seem to require a barcode to scan, so Tesco Bank products are no good.
