A way to hack Nectar’s Virgin Trains ‘1,000 bonus points’ offer

If you take a look at the Nectar app or the Nectar website, you may find that you have been targeted for a new Virgin Trains offer.

It offers 1,000 bonus Nectar points – worth at least £5 – if you book a Virgin Trains (West Coast) ticket until 23rd May.  Your travel date must also be no later than 23rd May.

You are looking for this in the app or on the Nectar site:

Here’s the game you can play:

The cheapest ticket on the Virgin Trains network is a one-way £1.25 child single between Edinburgh Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley.

If you book one of these tickets, via the Virgin Trains website for travel before 23rd May, you will earn 1,000 Nectar points.  These are worth £5 and possibly more if you redeem with the right partner.

Now, there are LOTS of trains between Edinburgh Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley and only a few each day are on Virgin Trains.

To be sure you get your points, book a Virgin Trains service.  They are not clearly marked whilst booking but the 14.12 train from Haymarket (Monday to Friday only) is one of these.  Once you select a train it DOES show in the pop-up who is operating it and the 14.12 shows ‘Virgin Trains’.

You can select ‘Collect At Station’ – there is no need for your ticket to be posted.

The two Nectar base points will post quickly but the 1,000 bonus points will take 4-6 weeks.  They WILL arrive, however – I tested this out last time a similar offer was running.

Note that you can only claim this offer once per Nectar account and you must be targeted for it.

  1. Do you need to physically collect the ticket? Or is just ordering it enough

    • Captain Ads says

You don’t need to collect the ticket(s) or travel. I have taken advantage of this offer on 3 previous occasions without collecting. As stated, points take many weeks to post so not suitable if you need them in a hurry for a redemption.

  2. This is not a hack. It is buying a ticket to take advantage of the targeted offer. The terms on the Nectar website say: To qualify for 1,000 bonus points you must book your journey on the Virgin Trains West Coast mainline between 9 – 23 May 2019, for travel between 9 – 23 May 2019 inclusive. Doesn’t say anything about actually traveling, just booking your journey.

  3. Now this is interesting. In my nectar offers, I’ve got this offer of 1000 points for LNER not virgin trains. Wonder if the same applies, I think there’s the odd LNER service through to Glasgow like the odd Virgin service through to Edinburgh, so Edinburgh to Haymarket should still be available

  4. I tried booking the suggested journey and it says on the payment page that nectar points are Not available for this journey. Is this a new addition?
