Donate your Nectar points to the ‘Big Night In’ appeal this Thursday

On Thursday day, the BBC is broadcasting ‘Big Night In’.

This is a charity extravaganza, similar to the annual BBC Children In Need appeal.  All proceeds are being split equally between Comic Relief and BBC Children In Need, with money supporting charity projects across the UK.

This includes vulnerable children and young people, people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty, women and families at risk of domestic abuse and those struggling with existing or new mental health problems.

Nectar has partnered with ‘Big Night In’ to allow you to donate your points.

Via the Nectar app or website, you can make a donation:

500 points = £2.50

1,000 points = £5

2,000 points = £10

Importantly, all donations will be matched by Nectar.  This means that for every £2.50 of points you donate, ‘Big Night In’ will receive £5.

I normally wouldn’t recommend donating your points to charity.  As points donations do not qualify for Gift Aid, it makes more sense to spend your points another way and donate cash.  This means that the charity can reclaim Gift Aid and, if you are a higher rate tax payer, you can reclaim additional Gift Aid yourself.

In this case, however, because Nectar is doubling up your donation, donating points makes more sense than giving cash.

Catch ‘Big Night In’ on BBC One from 7pm to 10pm on Thursday.

  1. Crikey, a decent use for Nectar points!

As Sainsburys have let us down with help for ‘vulnerable’ shoppers [*], if I never shop at Sainsburys again it will be too soon, to misquote Groucho Marx. I feel a grand gesture exiting from Nectar coming on, and if it costs Sainsburys some ££, tant mieux.

‘We’re in the money’, Mr Coupe. 😀

[*] Long story, but step forward and thank you, Waitrose and Iceland.]
